Stories Are Key to Alzheimer’s Care
Alzheimer’s disease can sometimes feel lonely, but it doesn’t have to be. While short-term memories may fade quickly as disease progresses, long-term memories often remain as fresh as yesterday. We love hearing the stories of Alaska’s pioneers! Socialization is an important key to slowing cognitive decline and companionship is priceless. Our friendly staff is specially trained to facilitate activities that help with Alzheimer’s care, but the Turnagain Social Club experience is about so much more than that. We’re here to help you find connection and purpose, and we’ll put a smile on your face.
Strengthening the Heart-Brain Connection
We know that fun is the number one secret to aging gracefully. Staying social and engaging in meaningful activities are absolutely essential for individuals of all ages, and these things become especially important when it comes to Alzheimer’s care. They actually stimulate brain cell growth and slow the progression of the disease, significantly improving your quality of life.
A lot of research is being done right now to better understand the links between social-emotional learning, cardiovascular health and neuroplasticity of the brain. Everyone knows that stress can kill. Physical and emotional stress can lead to hypertension and strain on mental health, sometimes resulting in depression or even brain injuries over time. The converse is also true! As the old proverb says, “A happy heart doeth good like a medicine!” A happy heart is a healthy heart and that leads to a healthy mind. Finding a New Community
As 2020 goes down in the books, and we turn the page to a new year, virtually all Alaskans have developed a renewed appreciation for connection in community. The people up here are known for their genuine kindness and neighborly attitude – as they say, Anchorage is a place where friendships are made anywhere and family is found everywhere. We strive to carry those ideals into our day-to-day life at Turnagain Social Club, so you’ll be sure to find plenty of friendly faces amongst our community.
This year has been challenging, there’s no doubt about it, but when it comes to navigating the challenges of COVID-19, we’ve got you covered. Turnagain Social Club is fully open and resumed all services from July 2020, which includes full-day services, respite for care-givers and providing our members with shuttle services to-and-from home. Ours is a state-of-the-art facility and we’ve done everything we can to make it as safe and comfortable as possible for our members.
Forging Friendships Through Technology
When it comes to great Alzheimer’s care, there’s nothing quite like face-to-face connections, but we understand that everyone has unique needs and must make the best decisions for themselves. Things change quickly in this current climate, and it’s up to you whether you want to carefully venture out to see us in person, or hunker down at home and join us online. That’s the great thing about technology! Whichever option you choose, you can participate in many of our activities online. We’ve developed a range of activities you can join from the comfort of your own home, such as live music performances, bingo, chair yoga, trivia, Pictionary, and more. We welcome you to come and join us digitally!
